Match report

The Under 18's (Sponsored by Steve Brettle Fabrications Ltd) end the calendar year with a demoralising defeat at home to Hartlepool St Francis.

Injuries had left the team with the bare eleven for yet another game, but give them their due, for the first twenty minutes, they played some unbelievable football, racing into a three nil lead.

With three strikers, supported by a commanding midfield, Coulby were very quickly into their stride and soon had the Hartlepool defence back-peddling.

Their first goal came after five minutes.  Matty Bennison powered down the left before playing a neat ball inside to Andrew Geddes.  Andrew moved the ball into space, before curling it beautifully away from the outstetched hand of the keeper and into the net.

Coulby's second followed a couple of minutes later.  Again, Matty Bennison worked his way down the left before putting a great ball into the area, which Jordan Turnbull gratefully hammered home for his third in two games.

With the clock just on fifteen mintues, came Coulby's third.  Luke Smailes releasing Connor Mitchell, whose shot from an acute angle, struck the Hartlepool defender, wrong-footing the keeper and finding its way into the goal.

Coulby were at this point cruising, but suddenly found themselves up against it.

Hartlepool began to attack at will down the flanks and before half-time had managed to get the game back to 3-2.

H-T:  3-2

Having no substitutes was a heavy price to pay for Coulby, with a couple of players having to play the second half with injuries.

No sooner had the half begun, Hartlepool were level, and from then on took total control of the game.

But for a limited few, in particular Luke Smailes, who along with Charley Hutchinson, worked their socks off in the middle of the park, the rest of the team seemed to give up and allow players to go passed them without even a thought of a challenge.

Matty Bailey and his back four became besieged by the marauding Hartlepool front line, with wave after wave of attacks coming down on them, and but for their hard work, the result could have been much more devastating.

Having drawn level, Hartlepool scored another five goals to make the result 8-3.

Possibly the best thing to come out of the game for Coulby is the three week break they now have.  Hopefully, this will give some of the players the time to think about how their actions during (and after) a game impact on the rest of the team, with the most important message being that we are a TEAM!!!!
