The Under 18's (Sponsored by Steve Brettle Fabrications Ltd) recent unbeaten run came to an end in the most dramatic of circumstances away at Greatham FC.
On a very cold day with the wind blowing across the pitch, both teams managed to play some very attractive football throughout.
The game earlier in the season had been a very close 1-1 draw, and for the first ten minutes or so, Coulby looked set on ensuring this game was won before half time, as they peppered the Greatham goal.
Andrew Geddes was first to go close with an audacious half volley from all of twenty five yards, which had the keeper well beaten, but unfortunately it was a little too high.
Danny Maguire worked his way into the area and got his shot away, but the keeper was quickly down to smother his goalbound shot.
Matty Bennison worked is way down the line with some great interplay with Luke Smailes but his cross into the area was just too high for Andrew to get a clean header on it.
However, after 15 minutes Greatham took the lead. A good ball down the left was played into the area, and their striker was on hand to slot home under the body of Matthew Bailey.
Straight after the kick-off though Coulby were back on the attack, and after some sustained pressure they pulled themselves level.
Luke Smailes was upended thirty yards out. Matty Craven stepped up and curled a fantastic ball into the area which was met on the volley by Danny Maguire. Unfortunately his connection wasn't the greatest but the ball fell perfectly for Luke Smailes to hammer home.
Five minute later, Coulby deservedly took the lead. This time, a great corner from Luke was met by the head of Danny but the keeper was quick to parry it away. However, the ball went up into the air and Andrew Geddes was quickest to react looping his header over the defenders on the line and into the net.
Coulby continued to press for a third with Jordan O'Brien perfectly meeting another Luke Smailes with a bullet header, but it went just the wrong side of the bar.
Meanwhile, Matty Bailey's goal was being perfectly protected by the hard work of Charley Huthcinson, David Price, Michael McAvoy and Matty Craven.
The final chance of the half fell again to Coulby following some great work down the right from Ben Pearson. He played two one-two's with Jordan O'Brien before putting a great ball across the box, which was inches away from the outstretched foot of Danny Maguire.
H-T: 2 - 1
Greatham came flying out at the start of the second half, and had some early joy with attacks on Matty Bailey's goal, however, Matty was alert to every one and kept the scoreline the way it had been at the half time whistle.
But, within ten minutes, Greatham had not only equalised, but had also retaken the lead.
At this point Coulby made a couple of substitutions bringing Tom Murphy and Josh Taylor into the game with immediate success.
Andrew Geddes chased what appeared to be a lost cause, but his pressure paid off as the defender could only put the ball out for a corner. Luke Smailes swung the resultant kick into a packed six yard box where Josh Taylor struck home.
The game ebbed and flowed for the next ten minutes with both teams creating a number of chances, without success.
However, with only five minutes remaining Coulby retook the lead. Another fantastic corner was met with a bullet header by Michael McAvoy leaving the keeper rooted to the spot as it struck the back of the net.
Coulby tried to play the game out, but with only two minutes remaining Greatham grabbed an equaliser.
A draw would have been the right result based on the work both teams had put in during the game but with the very last kick of the game, Greatham grabbed a winner.
A cruel end for the team following another excellent performance, but they must now pick themselves back up as they play Greatham next week, with an even bigger prize up for grabs, a Cup Final appearance at Rockliffe Park!!
