The Under 15's (Sponsored by Steve Brettle Fabrications Ltd) entertained unbeaten Middleton Rangers today and after a fantastic battling display were unlucky to end the game with a draw.Middleton have shown no mercy to all teams in their way so far this season, ourselves only three weeks ago, so the boys knew that this was not going to be an easy game. However, the opportunity to inflict the first defeat for Middleton was high in their thoughts as they started very brightly indeed. The Coulby players were first to every ball and immediately put the usual confident Middleton defence on the back foot and after only four minutes took a very deserved lead.A break down the right by Alex Myers resulted in his cross being only half cleared. Matty Craven was immedaitely onto it and put in a fantastic first time cross which was met majestically by the head of Andrew Geddes on the edge of the 18 yard box, and the ball flew into the back of the net. This early goal seemed to effect the Middleton players greatly and for the next 15 minutes of so, Coulby were in complete control. Jordan O'Brien and Luke Smailes had the centre of midfield sewn up and the running of Alex Myers on the right and Tom Murphy on the left continually had the Middleton team panicking.Such was Coulby's control that during this period they had three good opportunities to increase their lead, without Liam McPherson's goal being threatened. However, after 25 minutes Middleton grabbed an equaliser. A good run down the left by the Middleton attacker resulted in his shot across the goal creeping in at the far post.Although slightly shaken by this, Coulby soon took control again and 5 minutes before the break retook the lead. This time, after another half clearance from the Middleton defence, Jordan O'Brien collected the ball 25 yards out and hit a wonderful half-volley which left the keeper rooted to the spot as it hit the roof of the net.H-T: 2 - 1Coulby expected a tough second half, knowing that Middleton weren't a team to lie down, but were not expecting what happened during the first ten minutes of the half. The obvious control by Coulby in the first half had taken it's toll on the Middleton players and they began to go through a period of questioning every decision that was given against them, very agressively, so much so that in the end they were reduced to 10 men, following one too many vociferous accusations against the referee. This decision was the turnig point in the game, and it was the 10 men of Middleton who began to take control of the game pushing the Coulby team further and further back. Matty Bennison, Matty Craven and Danny Barry at the back for Coulby had to be at their very best to thwart the tidalwave of attacks that were coming their way, and Luke and Jordan, along with Michael McAvoy in the middle of the park had to work their socks off to try and contain the constant movement of all the Middleton players. This they did admirably until the very last minuite of the game. With their legs beginning to turn to jelly, a Middleton defender was allowed to run almost the full length of the pitch before being eventually halted with a foul. The resultant kick was hit with accuracy and power and although Liam managed to get his left hand to it, he couldn't stop it from finding the back of the net.A draw at the end of a very competitive game from two teams who play with passion and a belief that will serve them well for the remaining games in the season. Special praise must be given to the Middleton players who played the majority of the second half with only ten men but as if they were the team with the man advantage.
